This is an IMAP Gmail account. It only happens when sending to a Hotmail account not another Gmail account.

I have 2 other IMAP Gmail accounts that work fine. I have deleted this account and added it back with the same Gmail and Thunderbird parameters as those accounts. It still does the same thing.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help and suggestions. In checking those things, I think I found it.

The Gmail account had "send mail as" with several accounts including the Hotmail account. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I set that up some time ago.

did you set up the gmail account on their server to retrieve messages from that hotmail account by any chance? It is the most common cause of these sorts of issues, the next most common is setting up forwarding on the other account. In both cases forgetting you did it appears to be common.

There must have been something else to it or else why did the other Gmail accounts not have the problem?? At this point I have no idea.
