why is new mail arriving as read?

This is a recent problem and I don't know wht it started or what caused it but all new mail is arriving in my inbox as already read - ie not emboldened. I can mark it read manually. Any ideas? I've removed all message filters to see if some process is intercepting the mail, but to no avail.

I'm using TB Using TB 52.8.0 (64-bit) on a Mac. New emails are marked as read but I haven't touched them.
