How can I get Firefox to process menu functions? Menu items only light up, and can't be selected. Even the pop-menu is not displayed!

at some point after starting firefox, the menu is no longer functionable! when the mouse is held over an item like "Bookmarks", "View", the item only becomes selected, but nothing happens. the same goes for every item in the menu. also, the pop-up menu, used to open links in new tabs, new windows etc, just doesn't pop-up. the 32-bit version is started 7 times on my lenovo t510, with a dual core M620 2.67Ghz 4 GB RAM, running win7 x64. in total the 7 programs are using over 1GB of ram and i have two windows open with one open tab each in them!

thank you!

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Can you use keyboard shortcuts to select items and press the Enter key to open this selected item (Tools:Alt+T; Cursor Down to Options; Enter to open about:preferences)?

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

If that doesn't work then try a clean reinstall.

Do a clean reinstall of the current Firefox release and delete the Firefox program folder before installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows Registry and settings in security software.

  • do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall the current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (64-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (32-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then you can create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.
