I can send but cannot download e-mails

I am using the latest Thunderbird, for both hotmail and a demon 'Pop' account. Hotmail working fine, and demon account can send mails, but not able to download them. Webmail, however, is working.

Can someone please help? (in the most basic step-by-step guide possible!).
