I've read all the info pertaining to extensions and add-on's and none explain how to enable one when it has been disabled by Firefox. I don't have the Enable option as I've had in the past. My hard drive was bad and had to have it replaced. Obviously the guy that worked on it didn't know how to save my info. Can someone tell me how to enable my Norton Toolbar? It was on this computer 2 days ago and now it is disabled. This is the message: Norton Toolbar could not be verified for use in Firefox and has been disabled. about:addons Why? It was verifiable day before yesterday. My operating system is W 8.1.

There has been update patches from Norton for their toolbar depending on Norton version.

It's normal for some extensions to say they are not verified in Firefox 40, but it's not normal for them to then go on to say they are disabled and suppress the Enable button.

Another user had a similar problem the other day because Firefox had stored a location for an extension that was actually no longer at that location. So the verification issue was a red herring.

Could you try to force Firefox to rediscover extensions as follows:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename extensions.json to something like extensions.old.

Start Firefox back up again and check the Add-ons page, Extensions list.

Is Norton back, perhaps in the grayed section at the bottom, and able to be enabled?

If it's completely gone, you may need to reinstall Norton (or maybe its installer can do a repair).

It is now October 15 and there still is no solution to this problem with the Norton Toolbar's being disabled. Firefox upgraded to 41.0.1 on my computer at some point. Can someone give me a patch or fix for this problem?

Hi bkelly007, there is a different issue with Firefox 41. Some technical changes to what extensions like the Norton toolbar can do require significant programming changes, and Symantec has not yet completed its rework of the toolbar. They have an article about it here:

https://community.norton.com/en/blogs/product-update-announcements/firefox-41-and-norton-toolbar-compatibility

Naturally we disagree with their suggestion to roll back to an earlier Firefox due to publicly disclosed security flaws in Firefox 40.

If you feel that you cannot use Firefox without the Norton Toolbar, consider using a different variant of Firefox called the Extended Support Release (ESR) for the time being. ESR is designed for companies that require a longer cycle time between feature changes, and currently is based on Firefox 38. It will get security updates over the next several months, but not get new features, so changes in Firefox 41 related to add-on compatibility will not kick in for quite a while.

Norton is likely to continue to support ESR until the new toolbar updates are completed, maybe next month. After that, I'm not sure what they will do because normally they only support a small range of versions.

If you decide to try it, here is how I suggest installing it:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 38.3.0esr from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Fx41

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\Fx41

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Success?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that old folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \Fx41\Plugins
  • \Fx41\browser\plugins

Yes, I can live without Norton Toolbar for now and will wait on the "fix." Thanks.
