can't download new messages

Downloaded and installed update. Since then, can not retrieve new messages. When i try, it shows connecting to server but nothing happens. When I try to send a message it tells me it can not get password to server. When I check security settings, passwords, my saved passwords are gone. I can not get Thunderbird to request me to enter new passwords for with of my accounts.

Make sure Thunderbird isn't blocked by a personal firewall.

Problem is that it no longer recognizes my passwords for both accounts. Under Security and Passwords, there is no longer my saved passwords. Normally Thunderbird when trying to connect to server will recognize that password is wrong and will ask if you want to Retry or Enter New Password. It is not doing that. It just says Alert Sending of the message failed. An error occurred while sending mail: Could not get password for smtp.verizon.net. The message was not sent.
