I formatted my computer, so had to reinstall windows 7 and then firefox 5. I backed up the firefox folder and followed directions to put it in the right folder once firefox was installed again. Despite doing this several times with restarts of firefox and the computer, all my settings (Including bookmarks, addons and themes) are lost. I am back to scratch with a new firefox and none of my saved things.

You should only copy data from a saved profile folder that you really need.

See:

Also if you restore a full profile folder then you need to replace the file profiles.ini as well, otherwise Firefox won't find that profile or you need to use the Profile Manager to create new profile and choose that copied profile as the location for the new profile.

Thanks for your help, but it didn't fix my problem. Turns out that my .ini file was not copied when I did the backup. Next time I backup I will have to make sure that it does take every file (how painful) because apparently neither the copy to my thumbdrive or the auto backup to an external HDD took that file. Wonderful.
