When receiving an email with embedded images, they appear correctly in gmail, but sometimes are converted to attachments, but not always.

It seems to depend on who is sending them to me. When it is not working correctly, the embedded image appears a blank rectangle and a corresponding attachment is added.

embedded images are a very troublesome thing. especially mail from some apps.

Basically attachments and inline images are built into the email in the same say, with but a disposition statement making them different. Thunderbird is very picky about dispositions and will not display attachments unless they are specifically marked as inline.

One way to see if this might be your problem is to turn on and off the "display attachments inline" option on the view menu. If the attachments display after the body of the email rather than in the place you expect, the issue will probably be the disposition, or the mime type.

Clearly it is a problem on my side, either because of my use of Gmail or Thunderbird. Since the embedded images appear correctly when I open up messages in Gmail, I'm trying to find out why, when I open the same messages in Thunderbird, some consistently show correctly and others consistently convert the embedded images to attachments. I didn't mention it before, but here are examples of the made-up names of the attachments: hlcdfngfchcdijoc.jpg and kpphekfpfbpncdmf.jpg.

Does this happen to anyone else?
