Firefox 57 keeps loading an extra page

more options

We have an application that has, for the last however many years, launched a page from our server in the firefox browser with the command "C:\program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe {url.html}"

This launches Firefox to that page just like any link that a user would click on. Since the Firefox 57 upgrade the above command causes Firefox to open TWO pages ... the first page being the "upgrade to the latest firefox page and then out page in a second tab

If we just launch firefox from the Windows taskbar it launches with just the home page, as expected.

Why is it launching the upgrade page?

Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar. Then Help > About Firefox will tell you what version have. WARNING: and install any updates.

Hi dbdata, what is the address of the unwanted page? If it doesn't appear in the address bar, please use the Page Info dialog. Either:

  • right-click (one button mouse: Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info
  • (menu bar) Tools menu > Page Info

On the General panel, triple-click the URL to the right of Address to select it, then either Ctrl+c to copy it, or right-click>Copy, and you can paste it into a reply.

Also, do you only use 32-bit Windows, or might there be a 32-bit/64-bit issue?

ok the version is 57.0.1 32 bit

What happens is this: Upon launching, Firefox opens right away with TWO tabs -- the first one reads "new tab" and the second one reads the name of the page being loaded from our server.

After a second or two the FIRST tab loads the Firefox Upgrade page:

You can check the home page setting.

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.

You can check for problems with preferences.

Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename/remove the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in current Firefox releases.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

One other thought: is it possible that the extra tab is from a crash recovery? Is Firefox shutting down normally when you exit your application?

Here's the thing: This problem only happens when we launch a particular page from the CLI "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe mypage.com"

If we open Firefox from the taskbar we get our regular home page.

This happens on all PC's in the office and we exit normally (X)

I'm not sure if you are pasting the literal command line, but make sure the quotation marks -- necessary because there are spaces in the path -- close after exe and do not include the parameter(s):

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" example.com/index.html

Also, if you paste the following into the Windows 7 start menu search box and press Enter to execute it, do you get the normal home page or also get redirected to the Mozilla site?

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
