tired of Firefox failing and crashing every few months

Refreshing Firefox only makes it worse because it removes add ons that make FF useful. Then you have to go looking for them again. The real problem is the last update which "Broke" something. After you restart nothing works the way you want, i.e. I hate videos loading when I want to read news. FF has several flash blockers but they get removed when you have to "refresh" because FF is a failure i.e. It also kills the theme, then you harrass us to get themes and other crap??? Whats the point if you continue to make updates that cause it to crash. Get rid of your promotions if your going to continue to break the browser! This has been the continual problem with FF it has all these cool features but they crash when you push out the update because the developers aren't as fast as Mozilla. By the time the dev responds you make another "update" and the evil cycle continues just like GOOGLE!

I have the same problem - and today after the crash all my passwords had been wiped out.

If I have to put all my passwords back in - I may as well move on to another browser.

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

Refresh Firefox {web link} is a LAST RESORT ! !

Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings

If you're having problems with Firefox, refreshing it can help. The refresh feature fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks, passwords, and open tabs.

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.

When FF won't open email or has problem even opening I call that last resort! When it repeats following updates I call it poor programming! FF has the same problems as Chrome and you get no real support from the browser and they are the problem!

This isn't accurate but here it is. Yesterday FF would barely open my email and had place holders for pictures and video. I consider that a crash. nonfunctional! I rebooted and had the same results and the only suggestion thru the Support FAQs etc seemed to be the refresh and now I do not have any of the apps, or theme etc available and since the same thing happened in March I do not see the point in installing them again and so I guess I'm looking for a real browser or just use linux for online. really wish there was a real support system instead of volunteers.

Well, if you would provide us with the crash reports like Fred had asked a few posts up, we would be able to look at the crash reports and figure out what is going on. How are we supposed to tell you why Firefox is crashing if you will not submit crash data? Please do so and we'll try to help as much as we can.

Edit: Looks like we posted at about the same time.

yes the problem is still there, for the second time. When FF removes your extensions and plugins they do not come back in safe mode, or am I mistaken? When FF removes your settings they do not magically return in safe mode from what I know. Application Basics

Your plugins are other programs on your system. I see 4 extensions in your post above. Something is causing interference in your Firefox.

Well there's only one listed under extensions in FF Add-Ons and its Skype and its disabled. What other extensions do you see? Cute PDF is just a PDF creator Pocket? thats FF FireFox Hello ... I do not know what or where it came from and assumed it was part of FF. and the Multi-process Stage rollout I also assume is part of FF? if not how do I remove them? The extensions I like are gone from the list. Like the one that stops Flash from starting without permission and Ad Block, there were 2 or 3 others that just disappeared. I turned off my AV and other security which was on before they disappeared and the missing extensions are still gone. Why does FF remove them? It really doesn't seem like FF is as stable as it used to be, since the move or addition of mobile browser. Seems that Google has the same type of problem providing service to both android and windows computers.

How do I find and remove the other extensions that are not listed? and yes I already did a clean install of FF last night and still the same results. By clean install I mean I used Iobit Uninstaller and uninstalled the Mozilla maintenance files as well.

I've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.

Type about:support in the address bar and press enter.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Delete the extensions.* files (e.g. extensions.json, extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

New files will be created when required.

After, restart Firefox.

See "Corrupt extension files":

You will have to approve the updating one last time.

Thank you for your help but none of this stuff works!!!!

SO I got thru to the extension file and it was empty. Proceeded as directed and nothing happened no files were restored etc. I give up!!!!!!!! I'll try it later when Chrome screws up again ...tooo bad you both have the same problem and it does make me confident that anyone will really fix the problem I'm tired of fixing your programs when the screw up and I do not see why people do it for free! There should be a real support system not just volunteers, someone that has something vested in fixing the problem. But all they do is make useless "improvements" and do nothing to fix what they screwed up in the process. GOOD BYE THIS really sucks !!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have any crash reports from the current Firefox release (46.0.1)?

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more recent crash reports that start with "bp-".

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

You can find the report ID of recent crash reports on the "Help > Troubleshooting Information" page (about:support).

  • click the "All Crash Reports" button on this page to open the about:crashes page and see all crash reports.

Alternatively you can open about:crashes via the location/address bar.

A complete theme (i.e. not lightweight theme (Persona)) will always require an update to support a new major Firefox version because of CSS and button changes. That is always the risk if you are using a specific theme.

Crashes shouldn't normally occur with an update, but you have to make sure that you have the latest updates for all hardware and software components. In a lot of cases are crashes caused by third-party software (legit or malware) that tries to control or or interact with Firefox in a way that it seriously affects the stability.
