Viewing and acting upon messages in Thunderbird 78
I upgraded to Thunderbird 78 and can't see messages like I used to in all prior versions of Thunderbird.
In prior versions I got new messages and can see everything on the line - subject etc. I read them and then delete or move them. I would click on the line to high light it and then delete or move it.
In Thunderbird 78 new messages have a yellow multi-point asterisk to immediate right of subject column and the rest of the line is invisible until the mouse pointer is over it. When that happens, the line is is faintly highlighted with the text in a white font. After I click and read message, the entire line text becomes visible. How can I get all lines visible whenever I receive new messages like in T-Bird 68?
Second, I used to click and highlight a line which I can then delete or move to another folder – like how line is highlighted with a marked check box in Win10. The entire line is not highlighted anymore. If I click on the line and then click on Delete it is deleted. Without seeing the line highlighted I can mistakenly do something to the message. How do I get a selected line highlighted?
All prior versions did what I wanted. Thunderbird 78 seems to have many "features" I don't need and doesn't explain these things I see happening - like the yellow multi-point asterisk.
Thanks

If the menu bar is not visible, press Alt to make it visible then go to Tools > Add-ons > Themes and enable the Light theme.

That seems to have solved the problem. My next question is how it got into the dark mode. I just accepted the upgrade and have had several problems seeing messages. Where can I find more information on how 78 works?
Thanks
For starters, see https://blog.thunderbird.net/
Each release/update has release notes that have more information about what has changed in that release. More helpful links available in Thunderbird's official website https://thunderbird.net, which is where I hope you downloaded v78 from.
The issue you encountered comes about when Tbird's Default theme adapts to Windows' color mode. This adaptive behavior is new to v78 and is work in progress. Theming issues are present in v78, especially with dark theming, and updates so far have included improvements to that effect.
I first went online in 1985 with a Mcintosh and 5600 baud modem - probably before your time. For privacy I seldom do social media and must admit that there are many "features" that I don't know about. The original Tbird from back in the Stone Age was good enough for me.
It seems the apps for phone and PC have installed much customization to satisfy what I feel is the "all for me" attitude in society - the USA in the forefront. It isn't bad except there are no real manuals. It's like a game where you get a generic description and find your way to success or a reset. I like the For Dummies stuff. I started with Netscape in opposition to Microsquash's Internet Explorer.
I'll go back to being a troglodyte and thanks for your help and all the volunteers.
