I am migrating to 60.X ESR and have been using LARGE customized tile layout for my users.

It appears the browser.newtabpage.compact properties has vanished.

Is there a replacement so I can get the big tiles back?

You can copy the profile but you probably would only want to use the released version of the extension and not the development version from Github.

browser.newtabpage.compact isn't preference that I recall ever seeing in the previous ESR 52 version, but I didn't use that version very long. But I checked an old Firefox 47.0.1 and Firefox 55.0 version that I still have installed for some reason I can't recall that didn't get updated and don't find that pref in either version spanning ESR 52.

I have a hunch that browser.newtabpage.compact pref was added by a "new tab" extension you were using that didn't get updated with the Firefox ESR 60 update due to that extension not being compatible with Quantum 57 and later due to many changes in the New Tab features. Old unused prefs don't get deleted during an update, they "hang around forever" and don't typically cause any harm but are useless.

You can use the cogwheel button button in the top right corner to set what to show on the new tab page.

See these articles about the default New Tab page (about:newtab).

Note that later Firefox versions use "Options/Preferences -> Home".

Hi RangerZ, the tile size on the new tab page doesn't have any built-in adjustment. You can modify the built-in page using custom style rules (example), or you could replace it with an add-on like New Tab Tools: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-tools/

@jscher2000 New tab tools look promising. Not sure I am up for making page mods. Will look into this more next week.

@cor-el Thanks, but not much help. Please pass on that pages with no date or version info I find annoying. The first link suggests I can drag the link, but this does not work in 60.2.1 ESR. You have seen my other post

The latest version of NTT (today), and by reading some of the comments the last few months, has issues with thumbnails - I can not get them to show.

I also see something on the git hub page about needing to do something "To get a working version of this repo in your Firefox profile, clone it" which I do not understand.

I plan to build a profile that I will clone on to all my clients and really not sure I want to go to extraordinary measures to manage this.

I'll keep an eye on this, but it's not working well enough out of the box for me to bank on. Maybe if I understand the github issue.

If I understand that correctly, it means if you want to hack on the extension code in place in your Firefox profile, or keep it linked to Github, there is a way to make that possible. However, that is most likely not what you would want to do.

If I understand things correctly I can copy the contents of a users profile to another lock stock and barrel. That includes the layout and add-ons. If I use NTT, that is what I want to be able to do.

Thanks

I am using the release version. Just so happens there was a release today.
