Did you do this : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/
Try making a new Profile https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles If it works in the new Profile then will have to move stuff over to that one then delete.
Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

ok i did what you have suggested but the problem persists last time i bookmarked a page and saved bookmarks was on nov 18th,then i added an addon to check for compatibility problems following an article i have read, but then i removed it,then i updated nvidia driver and refreshed firefox because it was freezing randomly-i was getting very frequently an info that some script was not loading, hence the browser became unresponsive for a while and then the problem appeared on nov 22nd is there anything else i can do? perhaps something in the config page that might be affecting the issue? i have been using the esr version of firefox because i can use the java applet, otherwise the browser is not better than others i have installed and i must admit that even before the occurrence of the issue it is not that fast
i went on and opened the config page and changed everything to default then some extensions disappeared and i had to reinstall them, but the problem went away.i hope it will stay as such.thanks for your help
Here's hoping. If the problem goes away, Please flag your last post as Solved Problem so others will know.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.
- use "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page
- https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
See also:
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Bookmarks+not+saved#w_fix-the-bookmarks-file
If "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page or Places Maintenance can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
- keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_process_the_backup_file_-_Firefox
You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
- Help -> Troubleshooting Information -> Profile Directory:
Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync while performing maintenance/repair efforts to files in the Firefox profile folder.

how do i know from the integrity report alone that problems were repaired, what's the wording in other words here is what it reports currently at the beginning: > Integrity check + The database is sane > Coherence check + The database is coherent > Orphans expiration + Database cleaned up > Vacuum Initial database size is 10240 KiB etc all of the above mean that everything is fine?
with respect to the places.sqlite files,i have currently in the profile folder three of them: places.sqlite places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal if there was a problem you mean that i had to keep a back up of those three?or any other file starting with places.sqlite?
you suggest to install the addon for maintenace?

Go to the response that solved your problem. To its right is a link to mark it as Solved.
in that instance the case was resolved-as i believe it is-after resetting all items listed in the about:config page to default so i did it on my own.how do i close the request under these conditions? i will not close it for the moment-even if you tell me how to do it-because another person has listed some steps to follow in similar occasions and i replied to him/her expecting some advice
Mark it as Solved by "your" name.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-firefox-bookmarks-to-backup-or-transfer https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/import-bookmarks-html-file This is a must to know.... I have had mine since 95
Pks thanks for the clarification, about mark as solved. the other things you mention if you look at my post " Posted 11/23/17, 5:30 AM " you will conclude that i do know how to import and export bookmarks
