I configured Thunderbird for automated download and installation of updates. I think that the fully automated process needs important improvements before it ss trustworthy enough.

After the automated update from version 68.4.1 to 68.4.2 my important add-ons "enigmail" and "google calendar provider" does not works any more, because they are "not compatible" with 68.4.2. But this information comes AFTER the update, and theres no way to roll back. When Thunderbird knows that installed plugins are not compatible with the version to be updated, why does Thunderbird not request a confirmation for updates from the user and informs about the risk that add-ons should not work any more? For the issue log:

  • Thunderbird should check for incompatible add-ons before the update will be processed.
  • In this case Thunderbird should inform the user about the risk and ask for confirmation, even if the option is set to fully automated updates
  • Thunderbild should save the old profile before an update will be processed to offer the option for an roll-back if necessary.

For now I disabled the fully auto process of updates and sets to information only. Hopefully you regards my suggestions.

Add-on compatibility does not change with minor updates. Add-ons will remain compatible as long as the 68.* version is supported.

Make sure you do have the latest add-on versions installed. They are available on AMO. https://addons.thunderbird.net/thunderbird/
