Sounds like your firewall is blocking the connection. See Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet for instructions on how to reconfigure your firewall to work with Firefox.

Hi, thanks, but that hasn't worked.

OK, you seem to be running Zone Alarm as your firewall. It includes a utility which checks to see whether a site is safe or not and also adds a plugin to Firefox which is listed as npFFApi. Can you disable that and see if it makes any difference?

To get to the plugins manager, click the orange Firefox button, then click "Add-ons". In the page that opens, click the "Plugins" link on the left which will open the menu. Then find npFFApi and click the "Disable" button.

Hi again, just tried that..................didn't work either, I'm seriously considering ditching Firefox completely, this is so annoying, I have used Firefox for a very long time and it wasn't until going to Windows 7 that I wasn't able to sort this out...yes it has happened before but in XP I sorted it out in files options, 7 doesn't seem to have the same options.
