Hello,

Unfortunately with the new Firefox update, the number of tiles is now determined on screen size and the about:newtab page does not appear to save the zoom level.

If you want to set a fixed number of tiles, I believe you can do so with the following extension:

You can also see jscher2000's Chosen Solution here regarding the same issue: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1025414

It requires the Stylish add-on but will shrink the tiles on the page:

As for your preferences not saving, please see the article How to fix preferences that won't save.

You may have zoomed the page(s) by accident. Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.

  • View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl/Command+0 (zero))

If you have made changes to Advanced font settings like increasing the minimum/default font size then try the default minimum setting "none" and the default font size 16 in case the current setting is causing problems.

  • Firefox > Preferences > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > Minimum Font Size (none)

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.

  • Firefox > Preferences > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

It is better not to increase the minimum font size, but to use an extension to set the default page zoom to prevent issues with text not being displayed properly.
