My firefox has been "not responding" and then crashing several times a day basically every day for a while now, maybe a month or two on my Mac. This usually often happens on the site Redfin.com but on other sites as well. The things I can remember that I've done to try to fix it include:

-deleting my firefox user profile and making a new one with all new info
-turning off hardware acceleration
-working in firefox safe mode
-running disk utility on my computer
-running an malware check on my computer, which was clean
-updating all my apps/running software update

Despite the above changes, it continues to crash.

Here are my last two crash reports. I don't have much because I made a new profile and deleted all the info from my old one. So I only have these two reports for now

Any luck with booting the computer in Safe mode?

You did close Firefox (Firefox > Quit) after disabling Safe Mode in Firefox?

more options

Yes I did quit Firefox after using it in Firefox safe mode. I haven't tried using the computer in safe mode but I can. But what will that do? What am I checking for when I do that? Thanks a lot.

I think the firefox Crashes because of low system memory, the website you mentioned seems to be needing a little higher RAM.

more options

Thanks Anush. I use other sites that might use a lot of memory, like watching movies and things like that and don't get crashes on those sites. Wouldn't those also use a lot of memory also, or no?

Also the problem started a month or so ago. But I don't think my memory would have changed drastically all of a sudden in the past month. So I'm not sure if it makes sense for that to be the culprit. Would do you think? I also don't notice my computer being slow or crashing in other ways, aside from this issue.

How would I check to see how much memory I have and how much do you think I might need? My computer says I have 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. Is that the memory? Does that seems low? Thank you!

Even I thinked about that, its definitely not a memory issue.

Have you opened in Safemode and tried, if Yes what was the result.

When you open in safe mode only basic services will be avalible in the system so, you can detect whether its an issue caused by some other third party application you installed or not.

Can you tell me any other website where you firefox stucks...?

Hi Anush I have used Firefox's safe mode and it still crashed. But if you mean did I put my whole computer into safe mode, I have not done that yet. I can try that next if you think it will help. Should I try that? Thank you.

Other sites that it's crashed on include Linkedin, Google maps, gmail, yelp. I'm sure there are others but those are the ones I have noticed. I'll see if I can notice others next time it happens.

That is a little strange, any ways.

Do you get any pop asking "stop scripting" or "continue scripting" when using the websites.

Since it happens in Google Maps and all i think the hardware acceleration can have some role to play here so can you try this as well.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Please change your name to, the true one :) If you don't mind with that. no problem with this as well.

Thank you.

I had already done all those things as directed by the firefox help pages, but it still crashed.

Very occasionally I do get a message about a script problem (can't remember the exact message) but that does not seem to be related to the crashing problem and does not occur at the same time or with the same frequency. It's just an occasional thing and I press "continue" and then it's fine.

Thanks.

I just turned off all my plugins.

I also see that this other person had a similar problem as me. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/989200

Google maps does seem to be one of the sites that can cause a problem and the Redfin site seems to include a Google map on most pages. For me that isn't the only site causing a problem but the person's problem does seem similar to mine and they don't seem to have found a resolution either. Actually every time I have a crash I think I probably have at least one tab open that is on Redfin, which usually includes Google map on it. So maybe that is the main site causing the problem. I found a lot of posts online about people having problems wiht Google maps crashing Firefox. I followed the steps in this link below and will wait now to see if it helps or not. https://support.google.com/maps/answer/18529?hl=en

I think Flash may be causing it. Could that be it? I changed the flash plugin setting to "ask to activate" and had no crashes for a whole day and everything ran smoothly. Then I switched it back to "always activate" the crashes started again very soon after that. If that is what's causing it, what can I do?

more options

That is why @cor-el asked you to try that in safemode first, So its an issue with Flash.

Do you mean Firefox's safe mode? Or running my whole computer in safe mode? If you mean Firefox safe mode, I don't think that's true. I did try it in Firefox safemode prior to starting the thread here as I stated in my first post. It still crashed. I dont think Firefox safemode disables plugins like flash. I think it only affects other types of add-ons. I had to go in and manually turn off flash. The problem is I'd like to use flash! I read that there could be corrupt fonts affecting flash so used fontbook to clean out some fonts. I'll see if that helps. I am also getting some "unresponsive script" messages on some sites now. This has big one big puzzle! Thanks for all your suggestions.

I've closed and restarted Firefox many times throughout all this. That does nothing to fix it. I don't really see how that bug relates to the issue I was having with Firefox freezing and crashing. The bug says it's about problems with history and bookmarks, which I'm not having a problem with. Thanks.
