Hello,

I am using FireFox 25.0 on my new Laptop and I usually have one window with several tabs open. Sometimes when I open a new tab, another new tab containing some kind of advertizing opens by itself.

Could this be some kind of virus or malware?

Any kind of help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks, Lars

I'm a little suspicious of an extension named "lucky leap". Any idea what that is? You can review/disable/remove extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.

Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Does that get rid of the tab?

By the way, the "Updated Ad Blocker for Firefox 11+" isn't very up-to-date any more, so you might prefer to remove that one and get Adblock Plus instead.

After a further search, you may need to remove Lucky Leap through the Windows Control Panel. I assume Windows 8 (like Windows 7) lets you sort your Programs and Features list by date so you can see how it most likely got on your computer (typically bundled with something "free") and what else might need to go.

You also could try some malware removal tools. This site has a list of recommended programs, nearly all free: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.

Thank you so much for the quick reply and the help. I googled LuckyLeap and like you said it was something pre-installed apparently and it is a software that will bring up ads. What is strange though is that when I bought this Laptop (bought it new) it had IE as its broweser installed and I donwloaded and installed FireFox. I have no idea how LuckyLeap got there. But I just de-installed it and I hope this will get rid of the ads!

Thanks so much, I very much appreciate your help!
