Hi All,

Ever since upgrading to Firefox 24 two or three weeks ago, Firefox does not start or shut down properly. My system is Windows 7 x64 in work domain.

I have two Firefox launch icons in my Startup folder. One to launch in OWA to connect to work's Exchange and the other to gmail.

Prior to update, both Firefox windows appear. For the gmail, it automatically logs in and for the OWA, it automatically selects private network and prefills my username.

Now, only one Firefox gets launched and is only the OWA, but it does not preselect the private network nor does it prefill my username. The gmail instance does not get launched at all. On top of this, every time I shut down the system, the system complains about not being able to shut down Firefox and I have to force it to shut down.

I have tried Firefox to login other sites and none of them now prefill usernames and/or passwords.

The only time I get it to prefill now is to close all FIrefox windows and then relaunch them. That is, start Firefox and manually select private network, fill in username and password, close firefox and restart to get to OWA, this time, the private network is selected and the username is prefilled.

No configuration has changed between the updates and I have checked to make sure Firefox is not deleting history, passwords etc.

All help appreciated.

Regards, Vlad

You can try to de-install Firefox, delete all system folders, which will erase all stored settings, but you make sure that the installation of the new version is clean and from there you will have to set up again as you had to see if it works well.

Greetings!

Try to use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

Wait a bit longer (45 seconds) before shutting down the computer to give Firefox more time to close properly.

Hello,

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Please report back to see if this helped you!

Thank you.

Cheers for the replies. It seems if I manually exit Firefox and then shutdown the system after some time, both instances start up the next time I login. However, it still does not prefill details. I might reinstall Firefox next week to see how it goes and will update the result(s) here.

Ok Folks, update time.

After much snooping, I discovered cookies were being deleted after exit. It must have been enabled as a result of the update to 24.0. After disabling it, it automatically logs into GMail and preselects "this is a private computer" and prefills the username as it did previously. I will have to see if the crash still occurs at the end of the day today.

BTW, cor-el, would disabling the use of built-in codecs stop the crash?

Cheers, Vlad
