error: request failed: Mailbox unavailable
I have my own business and domain (I'll call it Mydomain.com) and both my wife and I have att accounts (bellsouth.net). We use Thunderbird to send out mail but have it configured to use our e-mail addresses I'll call it "[email protected] and [email protected]
About a month ago, my wife's computer, which can receive mail gives this error message when sending from T-Bird: An error occurred while sending mail. server responded: Request failed, mailbox unavailable. Please verify that your e-mail address is correct in your account settings, and try again.
The settings on her computer (which doesn't work) looks the same as mine (which does work) except for husband@ and wife@
She can send mail via the web host via the browser, but not from her desk.
I'm clueless.
Thanks.

SUCCESS!!!!
Thank you all. I just learned something new, and it was easy-peasy.
I've been on the Internet since the dial-up days. My first web page for my business was on AOL because 'real Internet" hadn't made it here yet.
As soon as I got "real Internet" (dial-up Cybergate) with a 14.4 modem I registered nortonmusic.com and originally hosted with Cybergate who quit the dial up business, sold that to Mindspring and the web host section to ValueWeb.
I've gone through BellSouth, ATT, Mindspring and for web hosts Cybergate, WebHosting, ValueWeb and now Hostway.
I'm not sure everything above is in proper chronological order though. ;)
I've been using and dealing with BellSouth and ATT for years as my ISP and for the email host, never knowing that I could go directly from my web host. Nobody ever told me until you nice people came along.
So I did a search on Hostway and there was a page telling me exactly what to do. So now my nortonmusic.com mail no longer has to go through ATT & Yahoo to send mail out, I go right through my webhost.
My wife is so happy now (and when the little lady is happy everything is right in the world). Actually I'm not exaggerating about her happiness, but she's been very frustrated with her mail and she's also been very patient while I climbed the learning curve.
So I can't thank you enough for your kind and generous help.
Take care, Bob

Thanks for your quick response Matt.
I had to work late today, so I'll get to that tomorrow and post. But I did want to thank you for the help today.

Does AT&T use Yahoo?
The reason I'm asking is this. I use btinternet.com which also makes use of Yahoo.
The other day I was getting an error: 'Sending of password for user <email address> did not succeed. Mail server mail.btinternet.com reponded: Server Error - Please try again later'
Not exactly the same error message but similiar. So I'm wondering if you are experiencing the same problem. Mine was a pop mail account, but that may not be necessary.
This is a server issue.
I also could logon to my webmail account.
In my case, the BT and Yahoo servers were not in synch. In your case, maybe the AT&T server is not in synch with yahoo. Initially it kept wanting to get me to use a bt login to reset a password which is not the correct way to do it as I could access webmail ok.
I used this link: https://login.yahoo.com/ and reset the password to the exactly same password I was currently using to access webmail and which was being used in TB.
Suddenly all was working in TB again.
If for some reason, you are redirected to anything other than what that link says above, then clear your browser cache and re try.
Give it a try and please report back on results.
First of all to Matt:
Wife's is not working, Mine is.
Hers does not work in the safe mode either.

Toad-Hall,
Thanks for your info as well.
I logged into Yahoo and tried to change passwords, but the only option seemed to be the ability to change the password to access the ATT account, not individual e-mails using the ATT account.
Perhaps I missed something.
I'm definitely over my head here :(
I'm not dumb, but not formally schooled in computers either. I'm learning as I go.
Ok, I am totally amazed that any of that works. Perhaps your ATT allows you to register email addresses that you are going to use to send mail on their servers and you have only registered one, But in truth you should be using the SMTP server for nortonmusic, not the dodgy one supplied by ATT.
Historically they blocked port 25 to try and force their consumers into a tight narrow ATT product selection, but the advent of Gmail and the opening up of the original Yahoo to allow use of mail clients killed that, I suggest you contact your domain host and get their SMTP server details for your domain and we try using those. In the long run it will be less problematical.
Again, I'm not ignoring your kind responses. Thank you very much.
I lost a PA speaker, had to shop for a new one (I make my living playing music), had some out of town gigs, and as always, I have to be a band salesman.
I'll contact my webhost sometime later this week and see if I can get the info you generously pointed me to.
I don't know how to use the SMTP server for Norton Music, but perhaps tech help and my webhost can help with that.
If I can avoid ATT/Yahoo and bypass the bellsouth.net (ATT) address that I never use I'll be very, very happy. Because every time I have a problem (and I don't have them that often) ATT blames Yahoo who blames ATT who blames Yahoo and so on.
ATT will help using my bellsouth address but not with any desktop clients.
I've been on the 'net since AOL came to town, and they offered an Internet Gateway, then cybergate, who was bought by mindspring, dial ups and then Bell South that was bought by ATT. My wife has used Thunderbird since the dial-up days. I hung on with Eudora until one day ATT decided that Eudora lacked a piece of newer security information so I switched to TBird to make it easier to help my wife.
Now she is irritated because she gets her mail via TBird, then goes to my web hosts web-mail (Open Exchange) to send mail, having to send a BCC to herself so she can keep a copy on her desktop. I don't blame her for being irritated. If I was a web guru, I could help more, but I'm completely self taught.
The problem with being self taught is everything you haven't come across, like this, is a learning experience. And I appreciate you all for the lessons you are providing.
I'll get back to you in a few days.
Thanks again.
Bob
Who is the web host?
Hostway (dot com)
Not really offering any help here, but I 'd like to say this…
Sure, email ought not be hard, and for most people it isn't. But setting up email to work with a personal domain is usually tricky, and can be done in different ways. There are various levels of integration, from one extreme where the provider does a good job, looks after everything and it's all effortless and seamless. In other cases it's more Do-It-Yourself and the user has to get to grips with DNS and MX records, and is not an easy job for the self-educated (and I include myself here; what little college studying I have done on computer networks didn't go down to this level of detail.)
Who provided your nortonmusic.com domain? Ideally they would be looking after all this for you, and you wouldn't need to involve at&t, yahoo or bellsouth.
