I have my homepage set so when I first open FireFox, the first tab is correct. Then when I open additional tabs, it is now going to an unauthorized website. How do I get the basic tab back that has the tiles on it? Thank you!!

Hello,

By unauthorized website do you mean a malicious site? First, you can change your new tab page by going to:

  1. In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter. The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear.
  2. Click I'll be careful, I promise! to continue to the about:config page.
  3. Search for browser.newtab.url
  4. Right click the row and select "Reset", or double click the row/right click the row and select "Modify" to change it to a site of your choice. Selecting "Reset" will set it to the default, which is about:newtab

If you are being sent to a malicious site in the new tab page, I would also recommend you check your extensions for anything suspicious:

  • Tools (or New Fx Menu) > Add-ons > Extensions

Check your list of install programs in Windows - Control Panel > Programs and Features. Usually malware comes bundled with other applications, so if you sort by date and see several applications installed at the same day, it may be easier to find suspicious applications that way.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

For future reference, if you find that your home page, new tab page and search bar preferences all change to something strange, you can install the Search Reset Tool. This will reset those settings to the default and then uninstall itself. Make sure that you check for malicious applications/extensions before using the tool because if you do not, your settings will likely keep getting changed back to malicious links. Bookmark and use this; Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.
