Recently, I downloaded and installed the latest version of Firefox (3.6.6). Soon after completion, my computer locked up completely. I could not click on any icon, start menu, or even open up the task manager. I restarted my computer multiple times (Even in safe mode), and the problem still occurred. Sometimes it would happen within a few minutes of startup, but it would ALWAYS occur when I tried opening Firefox.

I was able to uninstall Firefox quickly before the computer locked up, and there has been no issue since then. Perhaps there is a driver conflict, but I'm not sure...

Please advise since I prefer using Firefox to any other browser.

Sounds like a problem with your security software. Which security software (firewall) do you have? Make sure that you have the latest updates. You can also check the website (forum) of your security software to see if any problems are reported.

I have Norton 360 and Microsoft Security Essentials. I have checked for conflicts, but none have been posted (from what I've seen).

I installed 3.6.3 also. I have windows Vista, Kaspersky 2010 anti-virus. I have all the updates needed for all. What happens is that my system becomes unstable. The internet connection icon shows "local only." The hard drive light blinks (showing hard drive activity). I can go to task manager, but the system is slow in responding to any icon that I click. Shutting down through the normal way takes forever. I end up having to shut the system down via the button on the computer. I do notice the Kaspersky icon pulsating in the task bar when this happens. I went to their site but cannot find any issues. Help.

This has happened three times since I updated to 3.6.6. It will go to a webpage or two and then the whole system locks up, can't even use CTR+ALT+DEL - I have to hold down the power button to shut down.

Once the system is restarted it seems to run fine, but this is a pain. Windows XP SP3.

I have Vista and experienced the very same problems. I went to OldVersion.com and downloaded Firefox 3.5.2. Uninstalled Firefox 3.6.6., restarted my laptop, then installed Firefox 3.5.2. Then, I went into my directory under Firefox and deleted the updater file and also went into Tools, Options, Advanced, Update and UNchecked Atomatically check for updates to Firefox (probably not necessary but what the heck!). Now I am running great!!

Thank you for the suggestion and directions on how to get and install an older version. I have not had a freeze since I posted this, but if it does it again I will certainly follow your lead. Thx!

Thanks DJ, I have since upgraded my Kaspersky to version 2011, and am also thinking it's my ISP (Qwest), because the last time this happened I clicked on "Diagnose and Repair" and it tells me maybe a problem with my ISP. It probably doesn't help to have my PK5000 Firewall security setting to HIGH. Has not happened since the upgrade. But if it happens again I will follow your suggestions. Again DJ, thank you.
