Hi

Which add-ons are you being asked to install?

more options

Are these add-ons you already have on your system?

It’s possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.

Type about:support in the address bar and press enter.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Delete all extensions files and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

New files will be created when required.

After, restart Firefox.

See "Corrupt extension files":

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++ You will have to approve the updating one last time.

I followed everything but the last link didn't work

https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Profiles==link this was a page not found error

the adons that I have are adobe pdf, avast internet security and the ublock for popups advised to install by Mozilla themselves.

Also, following your advice, I have no avast protection anymore in firefox and cannot open a PDF in firefox because your advice didn't fix the problem it deleted all the addons.

When Firefox discovers extensions that it doesn't have a record of you previously installing, it disables them until you approve them. You may need to exit out of Firefox and start it up again to trigger a fresh scan.

If that doesn't get you the approval pages you're looking for, you can check the Add-ons page to see whether you can approve them there -- assuming you want to approve them. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then scan down the list on the right; the disabled extensions cluster at the bottom.

Often a link will appear above an extension to restart Firefox after you enable or disable it. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Success?

... cannot open a PDF in firefox because your advice didn't fix the problem it deleted all the addons.

That's a different issue because the regular release of Firefox 52-53 only allows one plugin, which is Flash.

You could try the built-in PDF viewer instead to see how you like it. This article will get you to the relevant part of the Options page to choose a different viewer: View PDF files using Firefox’s built-in viewer.

Alternately, the Extended Support Release (ESR) of Firefox 52 will still run the old plugins that ran in Firefox 51, such as the Adobe Acrobat plugin. ESR was first developed to meet the needs of large organizations that wanted Firefox to change much more slowly. It gets security updates but no feature changes for about a year at a time. You don't need to be a business to run it.

More info on ESR: Why do Java, Silverlight, Adobe Acrobat and other plugins no longer work?

You can download and run the ESR installer from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ -- make sure to choose the regular Windows installer and not the Windows 64-bit installer. That 64-bit version can only run Flash and Silverlight, so it won't solve your problem.
