why should an email reply from me appear in my Inbox ?
I replied to an email that arrived in my Inbox and sent it. The sent reply did not appear in my 'Sent' box but appeared in my 'Inbox'. Why ?

Perhaps you could show your wife that in Thunderbird you can read emails by either of the following methods.
A single click on an email in the list will open that email for reading in the Message Pane. The Message Pane appears below the list of emails. If you cannot see it then enable it ...'View' > 'Layout' > select 'Message Pane' or toggle the view using f8 key.
A double click on an email in the list of emails, will open that email in a new tab. But it does mean you have to remember to close the tab.
There is no difference between the two. The Message Pane is not a preview. It just means there is less clicking and closing of tabs. Sometimes it is preferable to read an email in a new tab especially if the email is lengthy.

There is an add-on that files the reply message in the same folder as the original message, but if you don't use it, check Tools(or AppMenu/Options)/Account Settings/accountname/Copies & Folders and see where sent messages are copied.
I am afraid that the reply was not explicit enough for me to understand where to go and what to do. Can you elaborate some more ?
There are different ways to access the Account Settings. Use the one which you find easiest to use.
If you have toolbars enabled:
- Top menu...click on 'Tools' and select 'Account Settings'
If you use the 3bar menu icon:
- click on '3bar menu icon', then hover over 'Options' , then click on 'Account Settings'
Via Folder Pane mail account
- In the left Folder Pane, Right click on the mail account name and choose 'Settings'
Any of the above methods will open a new window showing 'Account Settings'.
- In the left margin select 'Copies & Folders' for the mail account
- select 'Place a copy in'
now choose from the next selection depending upon your mail account type.
If you have a Pop mail account
- select 'Sent' folder on 'the mail account name'
If you have a Pop mail account, but it uses a Global Inbox (all your emails are stored in Local Folders)
- select select 'Sent' folder on 'Local Folders'
If you use an IMAP mail account and want to store sent copies on the server using the server Sent folder (which might be called Sent or Sent Items or similar):
- select 'Other' and choose 'Sent on mail account name'
Then click on OK to save any changes.
Close and reopen Thunderbird.
If unsure tell us what you currently have as your settings and what type of mail account you use either Pop or IMAP.

Thanks for that very concise reply which has enabled me to determine that my settings are OK ....... I think !
I have just changed over to Thunderbird from Windows Live Mail and am just getting used to the differences. My wife has had particular problems , particularly the way in which Thunderbird throws up a tab whenever an email is highlighted. I looked at her efforts on email to find that there were a dozen or so email tabs still open at the top of the window. It may be that , somehow , she did something that caused the email reply that she had sent to be put in the Inbox rather than the Sent box. We cannot find another instances when this has happened...... yet !
Thanks again
