i used to use firefox but uninstalled it when it was giving me a lot of trouble. i decided i'd like to use it again, but it won't install properly. firefox.exe doesn't get installed (even though the installation log says it does) so i can't run it. the shortcut on the desktop has no icon picture and an error pops up when i click on it. i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times. help!

Are you using the official installer from this site: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/fx/#desktop

I'm curious what installation log you are consulting. Is this a built-in Windows log or are you using a separate installer?

thanks for your response!

yes, i am using the official installer.

in the mozilla firefox folder created with the installation there is a file called 'installation.log'. this is what i was referring to.

Whoops, I never noticed that log file.

Is it only the firefox.exe file that has vanished from the folder?? I wonder whether overzealous security software or perhaps malware has removed it.

On the security software, if you have the feature to monitor for program changes to block changed programs, you may be able to remove any rules or memory of Firefox from the software and start from scratch. The procedures will vary.

On the malware possibility, you may want to run some supplemental scans. These three tools are highly regarded (and free):
