"show my windows and tabs from last time" does not work
This setting under 'Preferences/General/When Firefox starts:' will not work - it just opens up on the home page every time. It has always been my chosen preference and worked fine until as recently as a week ago, but then suddenly one day it refused to work. It was very close to a time when the iMac said it wanted to instal software updates, but I am not 100% sure whether the problem occurred just before before or just after that. I have 4.0 but this happened before I installed it - I only tried 4.0 to see if it would fix the problem. It didn't. The 'Show a blank page' option works, as does the 'Show my home page.' But when windows and tabs from last time is checkmarked, it returns only to the homepage on startup. I have tried rebooting the computer - no change.

same problem for me....except, when I close ff, it goes back to a set of windows and tabs from about 3 months ago
For me it wasn't Firefox making a mess of things. If you use CCLEANER or something similar, tell it NOT to clear your Firefox SESSION. That cleared this ghastly tab thing up for me right away.
EXACT same symptoms... Uninstalled 7.0.1... Installed 8.0 Beta3... NO difference. Could this be a Java problem? My 'Security Essentials' caught 3 "bad" files (quarantined) in the last update.
I uninstall Java, then installed... java version "1.7.0_02" it did Not solve the problem... guess it's not a 'Java thing' :-)
SOLVED - Worked for me, it might for you too... If you have already set Options > General tab to "Show my windows & tabs from last time", and it still does not work... try Options > Privacy tab (toward the bottom of the window) UnCheck the "Clear history when Firefox closes'' (Click OK).
You can manualy clear your History after a session... before closing your last browser window... Firefox button > History > click "Clear Recent History"... in the window you may need to click the "Details" button to view, and then select the items you want to clear. Click "Clear Now".
