Whenever I perform "reply" or "forward" with received emails in Thunderbird, I get the following message:

"The message was sent successfully, but could not be copied to your Sent folder. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.uni-mainz.de timed out. Try again. Would you like to return to the compose window?"

Frequently, I get a copy of my reply immediately into the Inbox or the replied message is not copied into my 'Sent' folder. Thereby, all my settings of the SMTP are correct!

I am wondering how can I fix the problem, given that I receive all incoming emails without problems.

It may be a timing issue on sending mail. Assuming you are using IMAP, TB must first send the message intended for recipient, and then send the message a second time for placement in Sent folder. You might try changing the timeout settings by changing the variable mailnews.tcptimeout to a higher number, the default being 100. You can do that in config editor - tools>preferences>general and scroll to bottom.

Dear David, Thank you very much! Sorry, I don't know where (in which file, which directory) can I find this variable "mailnews.tcptimeout" so as to change the timeout. Could it be in .thunderbird/r3yepypv.default-release/ImapMail , or should I search somewhere in the .config subdirectory of my Linux Mint installation?

Tools>Preference>General scroll to bottom. Click the button 'config editor' . In that, type mailnews.tcptimeout and the editor will show that variable. Change the value to something higher than 100 and then close the editor. If unsure if your change took place, repeat the process to confirm. I cannot guarantee this fixes your issue, but it's my best shot. (The tools>preferences>general may not apply to Linux version.)
