How can I fix conflict with Thunderbird and my ISP (Shaw.ca) provided McAfee?

When "Real-Time Scanning" is running, Thunderbird goes to "not responding" for a minute or so and CPU usage often goes to 100 %. If I turn off "Real-Time Scanning" TB seems to work okay, but I expect I am vulnerable to viruses. This problem has been going on for a couple of weeks.

I used to use "Avira" with no problems but McAfee is provided "free" to subscribers.

I have seen a report here today from someone who got a chat support session with McAfee and they "changed some settings" and all is Ok now. So I suggest you contact McAfee for more of the same.

McAfee info:

If you look on McAfee website /forums you will see that there are several complaints. There seem to have been issues for at least a year. It may help to get things fixed if you also report issues to McAfee.

If it has been going on for a year, I don't hold up much hope for a fix soon. I guess I will bite the bullet and pay for a year of Avira, which I used for years without any problems.

Thanks

You can keep McAfee if you like, just disable email scanning as explained in the wiki link cited above.

The free version of Avira might suit your needs, and by design it doesn't have the email scanning component of the paid version, a dubious benefit at best.

Thanks, but I don't see the Wiki Link. I'll try disabling the Real time scanning.
