Unable to change text color in current email within Thunderbird V102.3.2

I used to be able to do this on my older system. Have a new Mac now, color changes to text and/or background in the email itself no longer works. I attempt to change colors while writing a new email, or replying to an existing email, using the normal UI controls, the color icons on the tool bar for the window pertaining to the email which I’m writing, but the colors in the text area don’t change when I continue typing in the email window.

Changing color for ALL emails is not what I’m trying to do. I want to be able to change the text color of the current email when replying to someone else’s email, to make it easy to differentiate my responses embedded in their questions, etc.

Running TB V 102.3.2 (64-bit) on Mac OS Monterey V 12.6.

Looked at prior solutions on this msg board. There is no options menu under Tools, etc., guessing that is the Windows UI config. Or anything else on the Tools menu that looks helpful.

Unable to find any Display settings area.

The only config parameters that look potentially helpful are when I select Settings from the Thunderbird menu, then look at HTML Style. Not able to get my desired results though.

Use reader’s default colors is not selected. When I DO select that option, only black text is allowed.

I was able to change the default background color for ALL emails, and once I was able to change the text color for ALL emails, but couldn’t change it again. Had to select restore defaults to get a black text color again, and after that was only able to change the background color.

Again, changing color for ALL emails is not what I want. I want to be able to change the text color of the current email when replying to someone else’s email, to make it easy to differentiate my responses embedded in their questions, etc.

I created new emails every time — settings changes only seem to apply to new emails, not to existing, in-progress emails (I can understand how the app coding would work that way).

I tried two HTML settings: Automatic Both HTML and Plain Text

Changed back to Automatic since that’s the default.

Thanks for your help.

Your second picture shows the OS X color picker and the TB color dialog. You have to first close the color picker and then close the color dialog.

You may find that the addon, quote colors & Collapse, does exactly what you want.

Thank you both. Closing the color picker and the color dialog works. Curious that it must be done in that order, the reverse order doesn't work.

I'm also going to try colors & Collapse next, perhaps it's slightly more user friendly.
