How do I stop these errors?
After resetting my OS (Windows 10), and reinstalling Thunderbird, I keep getting error messages. I've enclosed screenshots. Every time I launch TB, I get the first image instead of the page TB used to show. At random times while TB is running, I get the second Image. If I click "Cancel" everything seems to be working fine, but sometimes the error window reappears 3 or 4 times. What do I need to fix?

I think there should be an option to enable/disable HTTPS checking too.

Hi Greg.
This should not happen, indeed, but from my experience similar certificate issues can be caused by your antivirus trying to check your encrypted communication. What antivirus do you have installed on your computer? Can you try to turn it off for a while and test the connection again?
My antivirus is ESET NOD32. After resetting Windows, when I reinstalled ESET, it downloaded a new version of the main program. Anyway, turning off IMAP protocol checking seems to have stopped that error window from popping up, but I don't know what needs to be changed to enable that start screen. (It's still set to scan incoming e-mails.) Also, certain images in e-mails just display a default icon, even after I enable remote content. I'm afraid to change ESET's settings at random, since it is in fact an antivirus program.

I turned off HTTPS checking, and that enabled the start page/screen and the missing image content. I guess I'll have to add contacting ESET to my to do list. Thanks for the help.
You're welcome. :)
