I was on auto update release channel but had not been asked to update since 2012. Now 38.0.1. Freezes (need power down to restart) my W7 Pro after receiving last incoming email. Disabling add-on's did not help. I removed calendar. Am able to send fine. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance (Note I will probably have to turn off and restart after receiving your reply so if there is any way to chat without email would be good). Thanks again.

If it works in Windows safe mode, then the problem is some other software that is loaded during Windows boot. For examle antivirus software

So Calendar is causing your problem?

Thanks very much for responding...

I don't think calendar was the problem as it continues after I removed it.. Still hanging with all addons removed. Works ok in W7 pro safemode.

Same thing in 3 diff user accounts. Probably something in W7 that was triggered by my update to Thunderbird to 38.0.1 from a version dated 2012.

I had the same problem, but found out the turning off hardware acceleration solves the problem (Thunderbird 38.1.0 on Windows 7 (64), Intel G41)

Uncheck "Use hardware acceleration when available" in Tools - Options - Advanced: General or set true for "gfx.direct2d.disabled" in configuration editor
