freezing
Since updating firefox to 5.0 it has been freezing and not responding every day. Now it is updated to 6.0 and still doing it. After a few hours of use it will just hang and say not responding. If I open tcpview, I don't see anything strange in the processes but then it starts responding again.
About 60% of the time if I load the login to google adsense it will do this again not responding. Many times when it does this you can see background content from other tabs or even a video that was closed in a previously opened tab.
These updates don't seem to be helping anything with this problem.

I have turned off extensions and addons, cleared cache and cookies, disabled everything I could think of and still since Firefox 5 and now with Firefox 6, it freezes constantly. Not Responding. About half a minute to sixty seconds and then it will return. It's virtually unusable this way and I've since installed and am getting used to Chrome. Perfect solution.
i cannot remove all the java extensions in firefox. There is no uninstall. I went to the files listed here: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions
and the folder "{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0018-ABCDEFFEDCBA}" does not exist.
How do you remove these extensions?

Still cannot remove these extensions.
I tried firefox in safe mode and run as administrator.
There is no uninstall button.
Each extension says "incompatible with firefox 6.0" and no uninstall button.
How can i save my addons, themes and links (favorites) and unstall firefox without these extensions and reinstall? This is stupid for firefox to do this with many updates that do not fix any of these problems with freezing not responding since firefox 4.0.
Forget about Java extensions, they seldom cause problems. Return to your original problem. Did you perform all other steps (except Java Consoles Removal) mentioned in my first reply ???
yes i did all the steps listed. i have done all this before over the last 3 updates also and nothing works. I just uninstalled firefox completely with all personal data.
I downloaded and reinstalled a fresh copy of firefox 6.0 and setup everything all over again. I will test it over the next day or so and see if it works now.

Okay after many months trying to fix this problem. It appears the only way to fix it is to uninstall firefox completely and remove all settings.
After installing a fresh copy and importing my bookmarks and downloading and installing my addons, everything now works like it should.
No shortcut to a fix for others with this problem.

I used the FF 5, and then the constant problems begins: FF (5 and 6) freezes/hangs (no responding) constantly. I try everything (delete session files duplicates, disable and uninstall all the add-ons and plugins, update it, change some entry in about:config, ALL!), but still freezing, no for a few seconds; por example: one of the freezes begins 12:37:35 of today, and finish (the hang) at 12:27:55. Other one, the next, come in 1:06:21 and finish 1:07:53. The next one starts in 2:34:55 and finish 2:37:20. It's very frustrating!
Hi Dorlando,
Yes I know .. i put up with it for months. You need to uninstall firefox and when asked to remove personal config data say yes.
You will need to install a new copy and download and install all your addons again. Make sure you export your favorites so you can import them easily.
Works for me.

I am using Firefox 6 under windows 7. Several times a day I got "not responding" for a few minutes, and then it seems to back to normal again. I have no addons, uses only default theme, no hardware acceleration, no Java. The problems remains the same when running in safe mode. I have only Avast running (but Avast webrep disabled). Windows Defender has been disabled.
I also noticed that under performance, firefox and plugin container are very active.
My friends have abandoned Firefox for this particular problem, and I wonder if I should give give up Firefox

For whatever it is worth diagnostically I discovered by chance that this problem disappears when in "in private" browsing mode. Otherwise Firefox "freezes" (not responding) for around a minute almost like clockwork about 2x an hour.
I'm running Nightly on a win 7 platform.

Firefox needs to setup some error reporting and fix this issue as well. It has been happening for the last 5 upgrades.

My conclusion is firefox 6.0 should be renamed to firesucks.. Plugin-container.exe is to blame in my opinion. I cannot open a tab, go to a bookmark, search in google, or minimize firefox without getting the (not responding) message. When using task manager i see plugin-container.exe always pops up and as soon as i end task, voila everything is fine. This really sucks, i'm about ready to do the unthinkable.... moving BACK to IE... I used to love firefox... now i loathe it... lesser of two evils will make me switch... Keep screwing things up mozilla.... Same thing happened to netscape when they went to a java based version.... idiots

I'm having the same problem. Firefox freezes the entire computer, and not necessarily when anything happens. If I just leave it sitting overnight, there's a better than 50-50 chance my computer will be frozen in the morning. It doesn't do this unless Firefox is running, and it happens even when Firefox is in Safe Mode. It happens with both Firefox 6 and the Firefox 7 beta. I'm running Windows 7 x64 with Service Pack 1.
@shanek Try creating a New Profile as mentioned in one of my previous replies.
