hello:

I have installed this wonderful addon, to help me replace my favicons lost in replacing corrupt places.sqlite. The addon is wonderful as enables a folder to store your troublesome favicons. So for me, gives me more control to backup and restore if they disappear again (which is very frequent on Fx upgrade for me)

Bookmarks Favicon Images

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bookmarks-favicon-images/

Please note: The sync favicon addon has not been helpful. I still have many favicons that are not showing (that were there in pre-upgrade/replace corrupt places.sqlite)

  • I clicked on the bookmark, and the favicon has not dispalyed. So I navigated to another page on the website, and the favicon is showing.
  • How to get a websites favicon?

Thankyou for your time

Chosen solution

Yes, that is OK. In this case the favicon is in the default location in the website's root folder.

For the favicons you can look at this extension:

You need to right-click the "Free Install" button and select "This Frame > Open Frame in New Tab" to be able to allow the website to install the extension.

Did you check the page code to see if it includes a link to the favicon?

  • "3-bar" menu button > Developer > Page Source
  • Tools > Web Developer > Page Source (Ctrl+U)
  • right-click on the web page and select "View Page Source"

You can check the Network Monitor (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer).

If necessary use Command+Shift+R to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.

Hi cor-el, not sure if I am doing it correctly as this is new area for me.

I went to page source as you directed of the web page where the FavIcon does in fact get saved on my Bookmarks Toolbar.

I searched favicon

found this: <link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/favicon.ico" />

so that looks like blank to me. so really no idea what I am suppose to do with that.

hi cor-el. I am not clear, sorry from your reply 1) are you saying the page source is not helpful that you guided me to go to before, or do I need to search for something different?

and lets say there is something in this line of code <link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/favicon.ico" />

what would I do it with it to get to get it? --- I tried this link you shared. click and right click.. but after 1-2 sec the web page opens tobig fat page of code.. crikey... not very welccoming.. so essentially no idea... If i was very quick i could get to the free install button, but then the big fat page of code apepared... so am not sure...

I am on mac osx yosemite 10.10. maybe its only for windows users.

You need to use a valid link with the xxxx in my above reply replaced by the actual domain of the website.

You rock! cor-el.

Thankyou thankyou thankyou! I am absolutely delighted. I am so visual, that not having my favicons on my busy bookmark toolbar slows.. me down..

Firstly,

Navigated to a page where the favicon is showing on tab

Then to source the bookmark's favicon

For the web pages, and the page source view, no favicon found via search.

  • In a new Tab, entered the URL e.g.[domain]/favicon.ico
  • dragged the icon from the page to my desktop

OR

For the web pages, where the page source had a favicon

  • Clicked the link in the page source page and it took me directly to the favicon
  • On the image, right click and selected "Save Image As" (drag drop did not work)

Then:

  • Renamed the favicon from generic name (e.g. favicon.ico or index.ico) to unique name
  • Moved the favicon into the "folder" that the new addon creates to stores favicons e.g.

Firefox/profiles/[profilename]/chrome/BookmarksFolderImages

  • restarted Fx browser for the updated image collection to take effect (as per the Addon's Help Guide)
  • Used the addon's option "Set Bookmarks Favicons Images", to assign to desired bookmark on bookmark toolbar.

Done!

slight update for completeness: Where I could not find any favicon, using pagesource, this online generator of favicons (upload an image and outputs a favicon), was very helpful.

http://www.favicon-generator.org/

-- one bad thing -- the favicon showing my bookmark toolbar, via this great addon, is not showing in the bookmark manager. Not sure why. That does get a bit confusing. I use bookmark manager all day.

But at least theey are now on my bookmark toolbar!

and I also fixed ones that never ever had an icon. cool!
