When I click the "Unread" inbox filter on OSX 10.9, why does it not sort my unread mail to the top or bottom?

I'm a proud user of Thunderbird 24.5.0, but the unread filler in my inbox does nothing. When I click the "Star" for instance, it highlights Blue and shows the starred messages first. Is this a known issue for the OSX version of Thunderbird.

Chosen solution

have you typed anything into the filter box? I assume so or the other options would not be available.

Have you tried with add-ons disabled?

Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.

I installed it on my home iMac with no add-ons, and the unread filter works as expected. I suspect it is broken because of my theme on the other computer, but I can't check it until after Memorial Day.
