When I clicked on the Firefox icon on my desktop it automatically started an update. When the update finished, most of the icons on my desktop were gone. (Before the update, only the Google Chrome icon was missing.) The names of the shortcuts are still there, and the links still work, but the images are gone. When I click one of these shortcuts, a pale rectangle appears, as before, but there is no picture.

Hi Contestcen

Ok, this sounds buggy and I would like to open a bug with more information if do not mind providing the troubleshooting information, if you have any questions about any of the steps below I am happy to further explain:

Icons missing on a desktop means that the computer has been affected by the update that ran when you launched the browser. Please try antivirus scan and to rebuild the icon cache: Windows 7 icon cache rebuild

If you restart the browser in Safemode please let us know if the issue continues and if the icons still do not appear please upload a screenshot of the rectangle you are seeing and upload it to this thread?

And please also provide the trouble shooting information from the browser: *Click the Firefox button at the top left, then click the Help menu and select Troubleshooting Information from the submenu. If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Help menu at the top and select Troubleshooting Information from the menu. Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.

  • At the top of the page, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
  • Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

If you need further information about the Troubleshooting information page, please read the article Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues.

Thanks in advance for your help!

The only firefox icon I'm missing is on my browser. It disappeared while I was using it yesterday and is really irritating that I can no longer tell my browsers apart after I start them.

Ok, thank you. Since the icon is missing please also try clearing the icon cache: http://www.heerengandhi.com/2009/07/2.../firefox-icon-went-missing-in-windows-7-heres-a-fix/
