how do I disable "work offline"?

more options

I can no longer access my email through Windows Live Messenger. A window pops up that asks if I want to work online because I am offline. It continues to pop up after being told to go online. After several times it says a problem has been encountered with windows calendar & mail can't be accessed. A help forum from Windows Live said to go to Tools in web browser & uncheck "work offline" button. I can't find that button.
