Why, after updating plug-ins thru firefox's system [specifically adobe acrobat 10.1.4.38] it doesn't recognize it and says I need to update ?

This has been happening on & off for awhile. I've tried updating thru firefox, uninstalling & updating in firefox, and within acrobat. It says its updating but the version doesn't change & can't find any evidence it did. Even uninstalling it still reinstalled 10.1.4.38 - the same version I've had since started using firefox. By the way, today I updated 'Shockwave Flash' thru same place & update said it still needed to update (cant remember which version it said) but I had disabled Shockwave for Director'. When I enabled it the update stopped saying it needed Flash update. Any chance there is a link between Acrobat & something else similar to the 'Director' that will assist in update recognizing it? A distant cousin-program?

Hi Uptown22, I assume you have tried restarting Windows to see whether the Adobe Reader update completes after a reboot, or whether Adobe's updater works better when the system has just been restarted and you haven't started up Firefox or any other program that might use Adobe files. If not, you may want to try that.


If you check About Adobe Reader or About Adobe Acrobat in your Adobe product, what version do you actually have installed?

If you have a version higher than 10.1.4:

Check for multiple PDF plugins on your system using could try either of the following:

  • full C drive search for nppdf32.dll (make sure to search in hidden folders) -- you will need to check the version properties to determine whether they match your true installed version
  • Secunia PSI (free for use on non-work computers): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ -- will find outdated plugins and in its advanced mode show you the location on disk

Adobe has issued 3 updates for Adobe Reader/Acrobat 10.1.4 -- the current version is 10.1.7. These are only available as product updates, not as a full download. To get the latest, use the

Help > Check for Updates

command from inside Adobe Reader (or Adobe Acrobat). This also should update the plugin used by Firefox. You may need to restart Firefox before it is detected.

The Mozilla Plugin Check site only recognizes 11.0.03 as the current version, so Vista users will have to rely on Adobe's updater to confirm that their Reader/Acrobat X series products are up-to-date.


Shockwave Flash and Shockwave for Director are two different players. Hardly any sites use Director media, so it's rare you would need that.

I have already said I tried from within acrobat, using 'Help' & 'Check for updates'. As I said, it showed a little icon saying it was updating (in progress) but after I waited and looked - it didn't show it updated anywhere. I looked in 'Properties', in 'About acrobat' and thru the firefox update screens. None showed anything different than when I started. Version 10.1.4.38 and 'vulnerable' and 'Update'. And I have been restarting it each time. I'm sorry but your solution doesn't work. I have to say when I go to the plugins page where it lists them all [and enable/disable for those of us who don't know what I'm talking about ] the little 'Acrobat is known to be vulnerable....' & "Update Now' link sends me to a page that says "Adobe Reader 9.5.1 and lower has been blocked for your protection." and gives me a link back to 'the plugins checked page'. I have no idea what that little tourist-trap is for but I just drove right by. Thanx for playing though jscher2000.

Ultimately, if Adobe's software cannot update itself, you should try Adobe's support. I didn't find any articles on silent fails, but there is one that describes various error codes you might see.

After a 15 minute shutdown process and' failure to shutdown' blue screen I went into adobe to see and it hadnt changed, neither did firefox's plugin update screen. So I tried to update inside adobe again and a ready to install screen opened, and updated & restarted to version 10.1.7 FINALLY!!! Clearly something else is going on that was preventing the update but |I'm not sure what. My IOBIT Uninstaller program shows 6 different abobe programs on my laptop. I have Adobe AIR, Flash Player 11 ActiveX, Flash Player 11 Plugin, Reader X (10.1.7), Shockwave Player, and Shockwave Player 12.0. Is this necessary or are these too many fighting to play all at once??? Can anyone tell me please?

  • Flash Player 11 Plugin: Essential for using Flash in Firefox
  • Adobe AIR: For running Flash-based apps offline (I think TweetDeck uses it, for example); might not be necessary, but if you try to run a program that needs it, you'll just have to reinstall it...
  • Reader X (10.1.7): Popular PDF viewer, but not the only game in town
  • Shockwave Player and Shockwave Player 12.0: Not necessary for most people

Thank you so much jscher2000. You must be a God of Geeks cause nobody would tell me what they are all for & whether I needed them or not. And there you just rattled them off like it was no effort at all. You are my lucky day - the kind that only happen once a year. Thank you, me & my freshly broken leg will appreciate it and now I'm downloading that Secunia program. Gonna find them buggers and fix my 'puter good! HAHA! 8)
