Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

maybe the preference for the new tab page isn't set correctly (an extension might have altered the page in the past). to check that please enter about:config in the location bar & search for the preference called "browser.newtab.url" - it should be set to about:newtab in order for the new tab page to show up. in case it isn't, right-click and reset it...

Ok I have found the problem. It seems to conflict with tool-bars! I only use two of them. Xfinity toolbar causes the error message. My "gamers-unite" toolbar just reverts to previous version page "about tabs"

Xfinity is a toolbar associated with my cable company and gamers-unite I have been using for well over a year. I guess I can try to turn it on when I need it and turn it off when I want to use the new tabs page.
