Vimeo requires the Flash plugin for its videos. If your plugins are disabled, Flash will not be loaded, and so the videos will not play. Please try re-enabling your plugins and then making sure you have the most up-to-date version of Flash. The easiest way to do that is to use the Mozilla Plugin Check page and follow the instructions there to get the updated version.

Hope that helps. If you update Flash and still have problems viewing Vimeo videos, please provide some more information about the specific problem you're seeing.

Hello, I have the same problem. I have the Flash plugin enabled (10.2.153.1) and no ad blocker. The play button doesn't appear on every Vimeo's videos I've tried. I have a still instead and right-click doesn't do anything.

It worked fine with Firefox 3.6.16.

mansolo: Unfortunately, I'm not able to reproduce the problem. All of the videos I have tried on Vimeo have played correctly on Firefox on both Mac OS 10.6 and Windows 7. I don't know what OS you're using (Windows or Mac), but here are a few things you can try:

On the Mac, Firefox 4 runs as a 64-bit program. Some users reported problems with Flash during the beta and were able to work around it by running Firefox as a 32-bit process. You can do this by:

  1. Browsing to the Firefox application in the Finder.
  2. Clicking on the Firefox application icon and choosing File > Get Info.
  3. Clicking the "Open in 32-bit mode" checkbox.

If that doesn't work for you, you can try some of the things suggested on the Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems page.

I hope one of those things helps you.

I am using XP 32 bit and the flash plug-in is up to date according to the Plugin Check page. My issue is the same as Mansolo, I get the static image but no play button or ability to right click.

Ok, I have a bit more info, it's not all vimeo videos as I previously thought.

This one works: http://www.mymodernmet.com/video/bodyboarding-down-a-dam

But this one doesn't: http://www.singletrackworld.com/2011/03/halo-bds-round-1-at-nant-gwrtheryn/

Is it just me with these specific links or is it the way the video is embedded which causes issues for Firefox4?

Vimeo broke playback on all versions of Firefox several months ago.

They have implemented a work-around for Firefox v3.6, but all other versions of Firefox (older or newer) do not work.

The problem has been reported numerous times, but Vimeo still have not fixed it.

@tsmall : Thanks for your answer, i'm on XP and my flash plugin is up to date and working.

@V8_shin_print : Exactly the same thing for me !

@Renfro : Yes, I saw that. Is it a Firefox problem or a Vimeo problem ?

@ mansolo : It's a Vimeo problem (although they tried to blame it on Firefox).

Vimeo made a change to the web site about 3 months ago and it broke video playback for all versions of Firefox. Later (after many complaints from users) Vimeo finally got round to putting a fix in place, but the fix only works for Firefox v3.6. Vimeo video is still broken for all other versions of Firefox (including FF 4.x).

Firefox 4 works perfectly fine with video from ANY site other than Vimeo (e.g. YouTube, Daily Motion, SmugMug, etc.) it's only Vimeo where video doesn't work in FF4.

It's clearly a Vimeo problem, but they won't take the issue seriously and fix it. Maybe not enough people have complained to Vimeo.

Thanks Renfro, I think that is the problem I am seeing.

I'll put in a complaint to vimeo but it looks like i will be going back to FF3.6 in the meantime.

Don't know why but I know it works using the following and putting in each individual video id. It works but I haven't tested on many videos http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=

Still no sensible response from any Vimeo staff on that thread ( http://vimeo.com/forums/topic:35904 ). Nothing about what the problem is or how they are intending to fix it.

There's now been more than 100 Million Firefox 4 downloads, but Vimeo don't seem in any hurry to fix the breakage that they caused.

Another answer that worked for me ...

A big THANK-YOU to dougcoull with his answer to the question “How come Vimeo won’t work with Firefox 4”. (Search Vimeo in FF Help).

Type "about:config" in the address bar of your browser to take you to the config settings.

Scroll down to "dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npswf32.dll" or cut n paste the term in the Filter.

If the entry is ‘false’, double click the entry to change from 'false' to 'true.

Close FF and then re-open for the setting to take effect.

Please take the effort to inform dougcoull if it works for you too.

Only issue for me is you may then find that plugin-container.exe is now running with Vimeo eating up and hogging CPU :(
