After I downloaded the most recent (3.6) Firefox, first time it opened, it asked me "Is page loading too slow? then switch to basic version" - something like that. Now it turns out Firefox is too slow (much slower than it was before - I had to delete previous one and reinstall it). So anyways I do not see this option to "swich to basic version" any more. How do I switch to basic version?

Disable any plug ins or add-ons that are not immediately required. Alhough not directly related to the start-up speed see:

I think iirc that beta 4 the next version is supposed to be faster, and that developers are looking further ahead to try to study and streamline the startup in future versions, even with additional software enabled. https://firefox.uservoice.com/forums/.../890849-speed-up-firefox-startup-?ref=title

"Is page loading too slow? then switch to basic version"

That wasn't a message from Firefox, it sounds like a message from Gmail.
