With an open email clicking on any link results with an error message.
Clicking on any link in an email produces the following message.
"This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page."
I have no idea what this means.

It means that your OS (Windows?) does not have a default browser associated with the link (assuming you are referring to links to websites). Thunderbird defaults to invoking the default browser app.
