So with recent forcing everybody to use the Modal Print dialog on version 97, I found out the Print button gets disabled/greyed out when I select the Dymo Printer on the list. Traditional print dialog has no issue, but without the print.tab_modal.enabled anymore, it's a pain to navigate there just for printing a label. Tracing back the versions of Firefox, it wasn't until version 85, when I noticed the print button gets disabled when selecting the dymo printer. Version 84's modal dialog doesn't disable the button.

To test this, is quite simple. Just open up any website, go to print and select the Dymo printer. Of course printing a regular website would output garbage in the dymo, but I have a formatted webpage made for label printing, so it gets printed properly. Chrome having a similar print layout, also doesn't disable the print button.

So I need to find out what constraints are set, that sets the print button from enabled to disabled.

I've attached a screenshot, as you can see all the print options are also disabled, all the way till the margin setting. The Print button is disabled as well.

TIA

I'm not sure we'll be able to solve this here, but I do want to suggest a few things:

Settings Reset

There is a version of this in the troubleshooting article (Fix printing problems in Firefox), but here's my way:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future. Since we are clearing data, that isn't really a concern right now.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste dymo and pause while the list is filtered

Firefox should show a number of bolded items with data it has stored about your printer.

(3) Use the garbage can at the right end of each row to clear the stored data. Firefox should assemble it again the next time you try to print on that printer.

Any improvement?

Error Message Checking

I'm not sure what information Firefox might be logging about this situation, but here are two places to check:

(1) Web Console

Could you open the Web Console (Ctrl+Shift+K) before calling print. To clear clutter, there is a trash can button at the upper left above the message area.

Then call up print preview and switch between a working and non-working printer. Firefox should rebuild its printer settings object after each switch, which may reveal a problem. Do any relevant-sounding messages appear in the Web Console?

(2) Browser Console

This is a stand-alone window you can open using Ctrl+Shift+J. It tends to collect background messages that aren't specific to a page, so background operations sometimes log errors here. Try repeating the same printer switch test and let us know whether you see any relevant-looking messages.

Thanks for trying.

I am testing these with fresh Firefox Portables, so it's as vanilla as it can be, shouldn't be dirty settings issue.

I was trying to see if there was some sort of verbose output logging of firefox itself, but couldn't find anything about that. With Firefox having its own debug and logging of webpages, Google search isn't very helpful with that.

If this doesn't get any further, I might try reporting a bug on it later, and hopefully someone with knowledge of the Firefox codes can shed some light.

Alright, going to move the discussion to bugzilla: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1756169
