imported email data to address book via CSV file which had no display name. Address book puts email address in display name by default. I want it to be 1st name + last name or not show display name at all, but display 1st & last. Is this really impossible as my search of forum indicates and if so what idiot made that decision?

When you import you are shown a window where you choose where the imported data goes. If email addresses have gone into "display name" then you haven't used it correctly.
