You certainly need an IP for both, your router and your computer when you want to connect to and use the Internet. Your router has two IPs, a public one assigned by your ISP, and a private one facing your LAN. The latter one is the gateway IP for your computer. Typically your computer gets the IP from the router.
Not sure what you're up to and how this is related to Thunderbird though.
