After upgrading to 38.0.1 ESR (and subsequently upgrading to 38.0.5) the setting "Remember passwords for sites" gets disabled after closing a browsing session. If I enable it after starting a new session, it works exactly as expected but the setting never persists between sessions.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Never remember history).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

My company is now supporting Firefox and by extension is forcing settings on the mozilla.cfg file ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\mozilla.cfg"). I found the following settings within that file which I was able to edit:

pref("signon.rememberSignons", false); pref("signon.autofillForms", false);

Works like a charm now. Thanks!
