I think I accidentally removed the Address field from the address bar (Remove from Toolbar...click...ooops!!!!). And Customize won't open, so I cannot access the list of buttons and fields to restore it. I don't want to reinstall or reset Firefox if I don't have to. How can I get the address field back and get Customize... working again? Thanks.

I had no place to enter about:config (remember, no address field), and the search engine field just brought up a list of sites/topics on “about:config”. I skipped the other two options and tried opening the browser in Safe Mode. It displayed a list of recent tabs and said it couldn’t open them (“Well, this is embarrassing….”). so I deleted all of the tabs it showed (I had previously deleted the recent history), closed FF, and reopened in Safe Mode. The address field was restored and so was the Customize screen functionality. I closed out, and then re-opened in regular Firefox and both remained fixed. Yey!

You can try to reset the browser.uiCustomization.state pref on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

You can try to delete the localstore.rdf file if that isn't enough.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
