Everything (and i mean everything) is untrusted. When i press the help tab, that is untrusted. Google is untrusted too. It says, "The certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided.". The error code is (Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer).

Chosen solution

Well, i fixed the problem a few minutes ago but forgot to post it. What I did was basically uninstall my older version of malewarebytes, installed the newer one, and scanned. The newer version found something about firefox extensions and i quarantined it. Thanks anyways jscher2000!

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).

(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item:
FirefoxSafeMode

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

I looked through that post previously and it didnt help.

This problem of showing web pages untrusted can occur due to many reasons. But in most of the case it occurs when the browser misinterprets SSL Certificate of the website. Try updating your date and time of your system, I hope this will solve the issue.

Here's a question that specifically mentions the same error message:

  • /questions/978584 www.google.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided. (Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer)

In that case, the problem was twofold (having so many different malware scanning programs running simultaneously and undetected malware).

A red flag for me is your extensions list, which includes both Norton and AVG toolbars, plus this:

  • Name: Browser Manager Version: 2.3.787.43 Enabled: false ID: {b64982b1-d112-42b5-b1e4-d3867c4533f8}

Note that "Browser Manager" is mentioned in the How to remove the Babylon toolbar, home page and search engine article so, I would start by following the instructions in that article, to remove it. I would also remove and any other installed malware scanning software that may be interfering with your preferred security software (what is that, by the way?) Finally, I would run the recommended malware removal tools listed in the How do I get rid of malware? section of the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Thanks Alice! It's working now.

Well after i uninstalled the babylon toolbar, browser manager and such, it was fine for a few hours... now it's back.?

A common problem recently is Firefox not being set up to work with your security software. Some security suites include a filtering feature. In order to filter secure connections (HTTPS URLs), the security software presents a fake certificate to Firefox so it can intercept and stand in the middle of the secure connection. To have Firefox trust these certificates, you may need to do something such as import a root certificate, or click something in your security software's settings.

But I'm not aware of Norton causing this problem, so I'm suspicious that it's something less benign.

If you have added Exceptions, please check the "Issued by" section on one or two of the exceptions you've made to learn more about the source of this issue.

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Certificates mini-tab > "View Certificates" button > Servers tab

Click a certificate and use the View button. The kind of issuer you might find is:

  • Name associated with your security software, such as ESET, BitDefender, etc.
  • Sendori (indicates unwanted software from Sendori)
  • FiddlerRoot (indicates unwanted software named similarly to BrowserSafeguard, BrowserSafe, SafeGuard)
  • Something else

If you have not added Exceptions, you can click the Add Exception button in the error page, then in the dialog click View Certificate or Get Certificate to see the Issued by section. You do not need to finish adding an exception.

What do you see?

I installed a software (free make audio converter) the next day I got the message untrusted connection. Well I went to control panel, all control panel Items, programs and features. I unistalled a software "Pure" I forgot the rest of the name. Reboot my laptop and It worked.

I have the same issue. I did add it to my exception but i still get the message.

You should be cautious when you get the 'untrusted' error message and that you should never create a permanent exception in cases like this without investigating the cause.

Check the date and time in the clock on your computer: (double) click the clock icon on the Windows Taskbar.

Check out why the site is untrusted and click "Technical Details to expand this section.
If the certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided (sec_error_unknown_issuer) then see if you can install this intermediate certificate from another source.

You can retrieve the certificate and check details like who issued certificates and expiration dates of certificates.

  • Click the link at the bottom of the error page: "I Understand the Risks"

Let Firefox retrieve the certificate: "Add Exception" -> "Get Certificate".

  • Click the "View..." button and inspect the certificate and check who is the issuer of the certificate.

You can see more Details like intermediate certificates that are used in the Details pane.

If "I Understand the Risks" is missing then this page may be opened in an (i)frame and in that case try the right-click context menu and use "This Frame: Open Frame in New Tab".

  • Note that some firewalls monitor (secure) connections and that programs like Sendori or FiddlerRoot can intercept connections and send their own certificate instead of the website's certificate.
  • Note that it is not recommended to add a permanent exception in cases like this, so only use it to inspect the certificate.
