Installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a new (used) computer for wife, pretty much duplicating what I have on my own computer. Both are 64 bit: mine AMD, hers Intel both about 4 years old. I set up Firefox for her with the same 5 plugins as mine, including WMP Plug-in 10 (compatible; Totem). When I go to an internet radio station on my computer and click on the play button (it says for WMP), the WMP plug-in pops up and I get both audio and a streaming light show. It has worked this way for me with very little interaction on my part for about 5 years. But I can't get it to work that way for her computer. The WMP pops up with the start of a graphic on the screen (a blob of blue-can't make out what) and it freezes. No video, no audio. Nada. The station is KHSU.org and the URL for the streamer shows asx, which I take to mean it's ASF content.

I've tried every suggestion on Firefox help, but nothing works. Have loaded the Ubuntu restricted extras library, but still no go. I can play the station with Ubuntu's Movie Player and Rhythmbox, but it's cumbersome. What could be causing the difference between two nearly identical (other than hardware) computers? Setting mine up to play audio thru WMP was almost automatic with almost nothing to tweak on my part.

You can try the Gecko Media Player plugin with Gnome MPlayer.

Also make sure to use 32 bit versions for a 32 bit Firefox version.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I tried that before (and I gave it another shot now) but it doesn't help. I can, however, get the effect I want by using the ubuntu movie player although it takes extra steps. I guess I'll never know why WMP works on one computer but not the other. In any case I'm going to cut my losses here and not waste any more time on the problem. Thanks again, cor-el.

Note that Firefox might be using to trying to use the built-in HTML5 media player to use GStreamer plugins (media.gstreamer.enabled = true) in some cases.

Maybe this will help someone else, but that info is a little over my head. As I said before, I'm giving up on this.
