QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6 X QuickTime Plug-in 7.7.3, Firefox inconsistency?
QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6, in Firefox Ubuntu, has MIME Type: application/vnd.apple.mpegurl, Description: HTTP Live Streaming playlist, Suffix: m3u8.
But, QuickTime Plug-in 7.7.3, in Firefox Windows, has not.
Why? How can I to correct this?

If you start up QuickTime Player from the Windows Start menu, then go to
Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences > Browser tab > MIME Settings
you can view and edit.. wait a minute, in Windows 7, this has changed, I'm getting file types here. That's not right. ???
Hi jscher. This it is my Windows QuickTime MIME Settings. It has m3u and m3url, but not m3u8.
My screen matches yours. I'm not sure why they are different on the different operating systems.
Firefox extracts MIME-type associations for plugins from the Windows registry (on Windows), and stores them in an XML file named mimeTypes.rdf. In theory, it is possible to manually add a new MIME type into the file, but the documentation is poor, so I am reluctant to try to build any new association from scratch.
However, since you appear to have the relevant XML on your Linux machine, you might be able to do a little copying and pasting of the relevant section(s) of the files between the two. If the file becomes corrupted on your Windows box, you can rename it and Firefox will generate a new default file the next time you restart it. (Or you could keep a backup handy.)
The relevant mimeTypes.rdf file is the one in your active settings folder, AKA Firefox profile folder. The quickest route to open that folder is:
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Please note that at shutdown Firefox may replace these files with cached/updated versions, so allow a few moments for Firefox to clean up files after exiting, before you open the files for editing.
If you decide to experiment, best of luck!
Hi jscher.
The QuickTime 7.7.3, for Windows, application, can not open m3u8 playlist !?!
A complementary information to your consideration.
VLC media player can play m3u8, but the Firefox plugin no.
