What happened to my Bookmarks Toolbar?

I just updated Firefox to version 15.0 on the Mac. Suddenly, all of my bookmark folders that are supposed to be in my Bookmarks Toolbar are no longer there, and the Toolbar won't let me put them back there. This is substantially non-optimal. I must say, I'm becoming less and less of a fan of Firefox with every passing update, which saddens me.

Chosen solution

So, I did the Troubleshooting "Reset Firefox to its default state" thing, and my toolbar folders came back. Now I'm working my way through all my extensions and add-ons to try and figure out which ones are gimping the toolbar. Boox did it, but I think more than one of them was doing it. Further bulletins as events warrant.

Hi there. Sorry to hear about the problems you've encountered. It sounds like you still have a bookmarks toolbar visible, but you don't see the bookmarks that you expect in it? If so, this article walks you through how to move around bookmark folders including placing them on the bookmark toolbar: http://mzl.la/LgyXG3

If the problem is instead that the bookmark toolbar is no longer visible, you can turn it back on again by following these simple steps: http://mzl.la/MpXk94

Hope this helps. :)

Sadly, it does not. My bookmarks toolbar is visible, but none of the folders that are supposed to be there show up. They're listed under "Bookmarks Toolbar" under the "Bookmarks" menu, or under the "View" & "Sidebar" & "Bookmarks" menu, but they don't actually show up in the toolbar on the window. And when I try and place them there, nothing happens except that they move around in the "Bookmarks Toolbar" menu.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"

  • Open the Customize window to set which toolbar items to display
    • View > Toolbars > Customize
    • Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout
  • Check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up

There is no "Bookmarks Toolbar items" in the Customize palette. "Restore Default Set" doesn't restore it to the palette. There is no "Bookmarks Toolbar items" in the Bookmarks Toolbar. There is no "Options" under the "Firefox" menu. There's a "Preferences", but there is no "Toolbar Layout" under "Preferences".

On Mac, you can use View > Toolbars > Customize (Firefox > Options is for Windows).

You can check for problems with the localstore.rdf file.

Try to delete the localstore.rdf file in the Firefox Profile Folder

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder

The "View">"Toolbars">"Customize" takes me to the "Customize" palette, but there's no "Bookmarks Toolbar items" in it, and "Restore Default Set" does nothing. Deleting the localstore.rdf file didn't change a thing.

Thanks for the follow-up, Joe! Glad to hear Reset Firefox was able to take care of the issue for you.

"Reset Firefox to its default state" erases ALL saved passwords. Is this really the only way to get back my Bookmark Toolbar?

Answering my own questions: No.

Disabling Boox v3.0 restored my bookmark toolbar.

I had the same problem -- my Bookmarks Toolbar area was there but it was blank -- and when I cicked on the CUSTOMIZE option, I didn't see a "Bookmarks Toolbar items" icon either. However, there were a couple of different icons that were marked "bookmarks" so I tried dragging them up to the Bookmarks Toolbar and one of them indeed turned out to be the real "Bookmarks Toolbar Items"!! When I dragged it up to the blank area, it suddenly turned into an icon that had the words "Bookmarks Toolbar items" on it and it worked. When I exited the customize, my Bookmarks Toolbar was back!!

So look around and try this. It resolved my problem!

To cor-el:

Thank you, cor-el!! You really listened to the question and gave an answer that really worked ... without having to reset all the other Firefox setup.

The only problem I (and the original poster) had was that the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" icon in the Customize dialog was no longer labeled as such, so it was not obvious what icon was needed to drag back to the Bookmarks Toolbar area. But there were a couple of icons labeled "bookmarks," so I just experimented and tried dragging them -- and one of them turned into the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" icon as soon as it was dragged to the correct area.

So it solved my problem instantly and I thank you very much, because I use that toolbar more than any other!!

P.S. Sorry for the almost repetitive posting ... I thought the REPLY would appear beneath the post I was replying to, not way down at the tail end.

Thanks again, cor-el! Your answer re checking for problems with the localstore.rdf file:

   http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf

fixed another problem I was having with trying to create new folders when adding bookmarks! I just replaced my corrupted localstore.rdf with one from my backup and now my bookmarks are working, too!

Two problems fixed at the same time! I love it!

For what it's worth, I have had the absent bookmarks toolbar on start up for the past few days, but could get it back temporarily by clicking "view" and "toolbar". I had another problem, which was that I was invariably welcomed by a "Well! This is embarrasing..." message on opening Firefox (using Ubuntu 12.04). I permanently (cross fingers) solved both these problems by deleting the add-on "Ubuntu Firefox Modification 2.6". Magic!
